Did you know that more than four million children throughout the US and Canada have braces? At Columbia Orthodontics, Dr. Croft and our staff are well aware of the fact that kids can be picky and meticulous eaters. If cooking for children without braces is difficult, preparing meals for children with braces is especially daunting.
Here are a few suggestions which might make things easier.
Of course, the ultimate comfort food is macaroni and cheese. Pasta is soft, so it’s easy for children with braces to eat.
When looking for braces-friendly food, always thing of ways to replace hard, crunchy foods with softer substitutes. Think burritos rather than crunchy tacos.
Don’t let your child convince you that fruits and vegetables are off-limits to brace wears. Just whip up a vegetable stir-fry.
Kids with braces should never eat meat from the bone. This means drum sticks and ribs are off the menu. Sloppy Joes are a good alternative.
Everyone recognizes that hard candy, licorice, taffy, caramel, popcorn, and all other chewy candies should be avoided. Try ice cream and cake as a sweet alternative.
