Here in the great United State, we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of each September. This is a day devoted to the American working community. The purpose of the holiday is to honor the country’s workers and the incredible contribution these individuals have made to the strength of our country.
There is some debate on the origins of Labor Day. Some credit Peter McGuire, a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Others suggest the idea came from Matthew Maguire, who was the secretary of Central Labor Union of New York. It is agreed, however, that the Central Labor Union’s plans were what launched the first Labor Day in the United States.
This very first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882. They called this annual a working man’s holiday. By the year 1885, the Labor Day celebration had spread to many different industrial areas and after this it moved through all industries I the United States.
Today many workers have to put in long hours to accommodate the sales and celebrations on these days. Yet we need to continue to honor the many people who work hard to contribute to the economic well-being of our great country.
The team at Columbia Orthodontics hopes all of our patients celebrate Labor Day safely and happily.
